The role of youth in shaping the future of education

Education is often regarded as one of the most important key elements in building a perspective future and a better society for the new generation. As Nelson Mandela had said it “Education is the best weapon you can use to change the future”. Although reforms in the education system are a subject of discussion, unlike other field that have been revolutionized by the technological advancements, education to a large extent follows the same framework that dates back long ago. Considering that youth are the most recent entrants on the job market or are about to be soon, they are also the most affected by the quality of education, one of their key competences. As the most concerned party therefore, it seems intuitive that young people should play the key role in shaping the future of education and the educational system.

Future of Education:

The future of education is personalized education. In fact, education is one of the few branches that has remained generic in a highly personalized world. Personalized education will bring forward the opportunity to sharpen the skills and knowledge based on individual capacity, talent and interests, while maintaining individual pace. The participation of young people in this process is of crucial value to the transformation. In fact, the current generation of youth is probably the first generation with sufficient competence for this endeavor, based on that fact that it is the first generation that can be considered native to the digital world. Therefore, one can conclude that young people have somewhat the role of change agents in shaping the future of education.

Although, non-formal education including online education (like MOOC`s), are gaining significant growth lately, formal education is widely considered as the most credible form of education and at the same time is the most spread one. Meanwhile, formal education has also demonstrated to be the least adaptable and probably is the most responsible for the generic character of education as a whole.

Opportunity in Crisis:

In light of current events and the challenges that have arisen as a result of the pandemic caused by the COVID19 virus, it could be said that formal education was forced to figure out ways to adapt and find new ways of functioning. Even though the circumstances are quite unfortunate, there is an opportunity to be seized here. The crisis set a solid ground on which the desired innovation in the educational system can be built upon. In this aspect, formal education can use a few lessons from the non-formal education, as a branch of the educational sphere that has shown to be keener on innovation up until this point. The existence of a certain competitiveness between formal and non-formal education created lack of synchronization between two branches that ought to be complementary to one another. Consolidation between the different types of education would maximize the value that the educational system brings to the youth.

As we speak a lot of efforts are devoted into creating an array of innovative technologies and processes with the intention to shape the future of education precisely through personalized education. Moreover, personalized learning is an approach that is widely listed by many writers and influencers as an innovation that will be brought to the educational system.
